Pond

The Pond site is located on the eastern shore of Kugmallit Bay in the outer Mackenzie Delta. Our ancestors hunted beluga whales here on the shoals laid down as silt from Kuukpak (Mackenzie River). Low berms surrounding shallow depressions in the ground mark the buried remains of at least eight dwellings on the north side of the pond. Two are winter dwellings made using driftwood, and others may have been a type known as a qarmat used in the fall. These dwellings were built and occupied by our Inuvialuit ancestors 400 and 600 years ago.
