Anglican Mission at Qikiqtaruk

1800s–1900s

The first Anglican mission in Inuvialuit Nunangat is established at Qikiqtaruk/Herschel Island. Other missions followed in the Mackenzie delta and along the coast.

The photo was taken outside the Anglican mission building on Qikiqtaruk/Herschel Island in 1909 following the baptism and marriage of James Atumiksana and Hanna Nasugaluak (standing at the right, in front) and Thomas Umauq and Susie Atugauq (standing against the building). Reverand (later Bishop) Isaac Stringer, the first missionary on Qikiqtaruk/Herschel Island, is in the centre wearing robes.
