1900–1950

Kitigaaryuk is abandoned after a measles epidemic in the community. Some survivors return later, and others resettle in Tuktuuyaqtuuq (see 1905, Mangilaluk).

This photograph of Kitigaaryuk (Kittigaryuit) was taken in 1909, seven years after the village was abandoned in 1902 during a measles epidemic and after people began returning there. The caption is: 'Old village and camp at Kittigazuit [Kitigaaryuk]. The shore is lined with ruins of old log-and-sod houses, and the hills are covered with graves'. Photo credit: R.M.
