Abe Okpik, whose disk number was W3-554, is hired in 1969 to head up ‘Project Surname’ to replace the disc system with government-issued birth certificates. Over the next several years he travels extensively, helping people to select family names (’surnames’) that will go on their birth certificates. Project Surname is completed in 1972, and the government stops issuing disc numbers.
